PANDEMIC ABCs
For my 2 and 5 year old. Pandemic ABCs is an attempt to explain some of life’s changes and our adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simple, up-front language following along the English alphabet and attempts at capturing love, strength, and humanity during a challenging period of time in life. The Pandemic ABCs were written for young kids and therefore uses simple imagery, mostly positive expressions, and highlights wave-top ideas concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. Pandemic ABCs first occurred to me when my 5 year old became scared after hearing a COVID-19 meeting in the news. But, I started to draw images of life during the pandemic after seeing a frightened expression on a very young girl at the grocery store as she peered around her mom, trying to make sense of seeing strangers in face masks. Life during the global pandemic affects everyone but the experiences span from a mere temporary inconvenience all the way to extreme devastation in terms of severe illness, loss of life, unemployment, and social inequality. Because this book is written for very young children learning ABCs it does not tackle serious social and racial inequality, nor does it address losing a loved one to COVID-19. I hope only to capture a few select scenarios that have come from the pandemic as experienced in America, such as a new love of baking, working from home in house shoes, or imaging the excitement (for once), of someday receiving a possible vaccine.
